SYMBIO Project

The SYMBIO project (Shaping symbiosis in bio-based industrial ecosystems based on circular by-design supply chains) provides European regional communities with tools and methodologies to build bio-based business models based on circularity by design and industrial symbiosis. Using big data and artificial intelligence, SYMBIO develops ten sustainable, high-profitability symbiotic business models replicable across the EU, aimed at increasing the presence of bio-based products on the market. It also provides a system to model, measure, and monitor symbiosis and its social, economic, and environmental impacts. The SYMBIO methodology will be designed, tested, and validated in 12 pilot regions across the EU, selected based on their bio-based resource availability, socio-economic indicators, infrastructure, and potential for close-to-market bioeconomy supply chains. Involving all supply chain actors in a quadruple approach, SYMBIO aims to drive local sustainable development, promoting an inclusive green transition through a bottom-up bioeconomy nexus.

Project Focus and Objectives

  • Identifying and evaluating resources and technical solutions enabling industrial symbiosis and circularity by design in the bio-based ecosystem.
  • Shaping symbiotic value chains using a zero-waste approach through big data and artificial intelligence tools.
  • Develop an integrated reporting system to measure and monitor industrial symbiosis based on regional multi-stakeholder co-creation approaches.
  • Demonstrating zero waste’s economic, social and environmental impacts of industrial symbiosis models.
  • Engage multi-stakeholder objectives in accelerating local industrial symbiosis and training circular practitioners.
